Vonage offers a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system that allows you to make phone calls using the home phone you currently have via your high-speed Internet connection rather than phone lines. It requires the use of the Vonage phone adapter which is connected to your high-speed Internet connection, but there are multiple system configurations possible:

• If you have a cordless phone system, you plug the base station into the phone port on the Vonage phone adapter. Other base stations and optional extra handsets can be place wherever you like around your house.

• If you have telephone wiring, you can use it to route the service from Vonage to the already installed telephones and/or phone jacks.

• If you have a wireless phone jack system, you connect the base unit of the system to the phone port on the Vonage phone adapter, and plug the wireless jack plugs in at any location that has an electrical outlet.

The Vonage phone system may work with PBX systems, but not all of them have been tested. Vonage provides a 30-day money back guarantee to allow customers to test Vonage service with their system to see how it works. For wireless phones, Vonage lines can support the maximum number of handsets that are supported by the phone systems base unit. For standard phones, up to 5 can be supported using home wiring, except in exceptional circumstances.

Vonage can work with most existing home phone numbers and if you move, you can use your Vonage system for both your old number and a new local number, for moves both within the United States and internationally, as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection available. It is important to provide a 911 address in the first place and to update your 911 address if you move so that if you call 911, emergency personnel will be able to use the 911 system to locate you.

Vonage provides a variety of features, including:

  • Caller ID with name
  • Call waiting
  • Call transfer
  • Call waiting with Caller ID
  • Enhanced call forwarding
  • 3-Way calling
  • Caller ID block and Anonymous call block
  • Call return and Repeat dialing
  • Do not disturb
  • Voicemail plus

There are both residential VoIP plans and  business VoIP plans available. Residential plans are differentiated by the number of minutes provided, the places that can be called during those minutes without extra charge, and the additional services. So, Vonage Lite, the cheapest plan, had 200 minutes and low rates for international calls, while Vonage World has unlimited minutes for all calls within the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, and 60 international countries included, plus unlimited readable voicemail and unlimited 411 directory assistance.

There are two small business plans available: one has 1500 minutes for calls within the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico; the other has unlimited minutes and includes 5 countries (France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) for unlimited international calling.
